Self-Directed Learning Plan
Now that you have completed the Self Assessment of the Volunteer Management Competencies, you know your areas of strength and weakness. At this point you may want to go back to the Self Assessment to access the relevant resources for areas you identified as needing improvement.
Developing a Self Directed Learning Plan is an opportunity to track your progress in building competence and confidence as a volunteer manager. Using a framework developed in Primal Leadership by Goleman, Boyatzis, and McKee, a self directed learning plan reflects work in emotional intelligence and adult learning.
Your self-directed learning plan should meet most of these goals:
- Your goals should be based on your strengths.
- Your goals must be your own, not goals someone else has imposed
- Your plans should be flexible to reflect the practical demands of your job.
- Your plans must be feasible, with manageable steps.
- Your plans must be compatible with how you learn best.
Your plan should build on:
- Who do I want to be?
- What would you like to be doing in five years?
- What are my strengths and gaps?
- How do I build on my strengths, while reducing my gaps?
- How do I experiment with and practice new behaviors, thoughts and feelings to the point of mastery?
- How do I develop supportive and trusting relationships that make change possible?
