In the last three years there have been six Presidential Declarations of Disaster in Maine, covering 13 of Maine’s 16 counties. These disasters have involved several storms, flooding, landslides and tornadoes. A prepared and involved community is better positioned to deal with and recover from these types of disasters. Currently there is only one COAD in Maine – the Southern Maine COAD.
The Commission anticipates making two awards to assist in formation and start-up costs associated with beginning two separate COADs in two separate parts of Maine. MCCS will also provide technical assistance to the newly formed groups.
Successful grantees will form a coalition of at least eight members representative of a broad spectrum of community stakeholders - including government, emergency management, social services, and businesses. Preference will be given to applicants who propose to serve multiple towns/counties where feasible to do so.
Eligible applicants are nonprofit organizations, civic groups with a nonprofit status, state and local government agencies, faith-based organizations and congregations, local educational institutions, and institutions of higher education.
The Maine Commission for Community Service builds capacity and sustainability in Maine's volunteer and service communities by funding programs, developing managers of volunteers and service-learning practitioners, raising awareness of sector issues, and promoting service as a strategy.
