There are 22 AmeriCorps*VISTA members and two VISTA Leaders in the Maine VISTA Project as of Fall 2012. Eight more VISTAs will join the project in early November and bring the team to full strength (32 members). AmeriCorps*VISTA is an anti-poverty initiative through which Members build capacity to bring individuals and communities out of poverty.
Members' service is focused on building capacity in nonprofits, schools, and government agencies throughout Maine. They aim to help these organizations address local needs related to Education, Veterans and Military Families, Healthy Futures, and Volunteer Management.
VISTAs stationed at education sites will focus on implementation of service-learning practices across a school or program. One of the goals is to create a variety of service-learning implementation models that can be replicated across the state.
VISTA members focused on needs of veterans and military families will work to better leverage community and governmental networks that assist veterans and their families access services including educational benefits, employment, health, transportation, and legal services.
Healthy Futures VISTAs focus on the health needs of children, with particular emphasis on childhood obesity.
Volunteer Management VISTAs work in organizations helping to implement best practices in Volunteer Management and develop volunteer recruitment strategies.
The project is sponsored by the Maine Commission for Community Service in partnership with the Corporation for National and Community Service.
