Is Homes For Service for You?

As an information-only network, "Homes for Service" does not check:

  • the suitability of any offer to be a "Home for Service"
  • the suitability of any AmeriCorps volunteer to be a guest or tenant.

This network also does not provide references for any participants. Its role is to let the community know that AmeriCorps members need assistance with housing and inform AmeriCorps members about who is willing to help.

Think of "Homes for Service" the way you would a Community Message Board. The only difference is that housing is the only topic covered here!

Anyone offering to be a host "Home for Service" should follow the customary process for selecting a tenant or roommate. One recommendation is to request that one reference be the Program Director of the AmeriCorps project in which the member volunteers. Potential hosts or landlords should take appropriate steps to determine if the AmeriCorps member will be a suitable member of the household.

AmeriCorps members seeking housing should follow the customary process for locating rented housing. Short term offers may give out-of-state members a chance to look around the community and assess the best choices for housing over the longer term. A month with a Host can provide time to meet your fellow AmeriCorps volunteers and learn about the travel requirements of your assignment. You might want to make adjustments once you are through orientation!
