Homes for Service is a network of "host homes" for AmeriCorps volunteers who need affordable housing during their year of service. Local citizens who provide this help to AmeriCorps members can offer to:

  • provide a room for free for a specific period of time (one month to a year)
  • provide free rent in exchange for house sitting during the winter months
  • significantly reduce the rent on an apartment
  • rent a room in their home

Why are Host Homes needed?

AmeriCorps members donate a year in their lives to:

  • teach your children environmental science and fire safety.
  • tutor children in school and at community centers.
  • recruit volunteers to serve as mentors.
  • rehab buildings for low income housing.
  • make your neighborhood a better place to live.

Can you help?

Hundreds of AmeriCorps members serve full-time throughout Maine in exchange for a living allowance of $10,000. Their low income, combined with the high rents, heating costs, and low vacancy rates in many of the towns they work in, make it very difficult to find an affordable place to live during their volunteer year.
